Willie Clancy Week Ceilithe - Miltown Malbay

At Various, Miltown Malbay · Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare

Traditional Irish music session

Every July, Miltown Malbay becomes the traditional music capital of Ireland for a week. The ceilithe - nightly formal dances held during Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy - sit at the warm centre of that transformation. From Monday 6 July to Sunday 12 July 2026, some of Ireland’s finest céilí bands take the stage at the Mill Marquee on the GAA grounds, and the floor fills with dancers from Clare, from Dublin, and from considerably further afield. If you have ever wanted to experience a proper Irish céilí in the company of people who really mean it, this is the week.

What to expect

The céilithe run from 9:30 pm to 1 am, and one ticket covers both the Mill Marquee and the Quilty Tavern on nights when that secondary venue is running. A different band plays each night - the Kilfenora Céilí Band on Monday and Wednesday (6 and 8 July), the Tulla Céilí Band on Tuesday and Thursday (7 and 9 July), with Brian Ború, Taylor’s Cross, Dal gCais, Four Courts, and the Abbey Trio filling the rest of the week. The Kilfenora and Tulla are institutions in Clare; hearing either drive a packed floor is unlike anything else in Irish traditional culture. The 2026 marquee is a large solid-sided structure that holds the sound well and keeps the Atlantic weather out. Pub sessions and street music run all week, but the céilithe are the organised, ticketed anchor of the school.

Getting there

Miltown Malbay is on the N67, roughly 35 km south-west of Ennis along the west Clare coast. Bus Éireann runs services from Ennis, but evening return timetables during festival week are limited - driving or arranging a lift is easier. From Limerick the drive is around an hour. Parking is available around town, though the week draws very large crowds and accommodation fills months in advance.

While you’re in Miltown Malbay

During Willie Clancy week the music finds every corner of the town - pub sessions start mid-afternoon and rarely stop before the early hours. Spanish Point beach is a short drive north for sea air between events. There is more to see in Miltown Malbay and across Co. Clare.
