One Sunday each July, Enybegs in Co. Longford becomes the hub of rural Midlands life for a day. The County Longford Agricultural Show has been running since 1902, and in that time it has grown into one of the most well-attended shows in the region. It is exactly the kind of day that works equally well for farmers comparing cattle bloodlines and for families who simply want a proper day out with music, food, and space for children to roam.
The show runs across livestock, equestrian, and craft categories, with competitions drawing entries from across the county and beyond. Cattle classes cover pedigree and commercial breeds; the horse ring hosts brood mares and foals, ridden classes, and thoroughbreds. Sheep, rare breeds, dogs, and cats round out the animal competitions.
Beyond the livestock pens, the show has a strong craft and horticulture tradition - photography, floral arrangements, art, and homecraft entries sit alongside horticultural exhibits. Trade stands and vintage machinery displays are a fixture, and a tug-of-war usually draws a crowd. Live music and children’s entertainment keep things moving through the afternoon.
The setting is Gerry Hagan’s land at Enybegs, outside Killoe - a genuine farm rather than a fairground. Bring comfortable shoes and allow a few hours to get around the full site.
Enybegs is a short drive from Longford town, which sits on the N4 Dublin-to-Sligo national route. From Dublin, it is roughly 120km, about 90 minutes by car. From Athlone to the south, the drive is around 45 minutes via the N55. Longford town has a train station with regular services on the Dublin Heuston to Sligo line, though you will need a car or taxi from the station to reach the show grounds. Parking is typically on site at the show.
