Death Cab for Cutie have been writing songs that feel like they were made specifically for you since the late 1990s, and seeing them live at the 3Olympia Theatre in Dublin is one of those gigs you do not let pass. Ben Gibbard’s band are touring in support of their eleventh studio album, “I Built You A Tower”, and the setlist will pull from a catalogue that spans more than two decades of emotionally precise indie rock. This is a show for long-time fans who know every word and for newcomers curious what all the fuss is about - both will leave converted.
The 3Olympia holds around 1,600 people, which gives it an intimacy that larger arenas cannot match. There are both standing and seated areas, so you can choose how you experience it. Expect songs from across the Death Cab back catalogue - “Transatlanticism”, “Soul Meets Body”, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark”, “Crooked Teeth” - alongside material from the new record. Ben Gibbard is a careful, engaged performer; the band are tight and have been playing together long enough that the live versions of these songs carry real weight. Doors open at 7:00pm, with the show starting at 7:30pm. Under-14s must be accompanied by an adult, and standing tickets are recommended for those 16 and over.
The 3Olympia Theatre sits on Dame Street in Dublin city centre, a short walk from Temple Bar and directly served by several Dublin Bus routes along the Dame Street corridor. The nearest Luas stop is Jervis on the Red Line or St Stephen’s Green on the Green Line, both a ten-minute walk. If you are coming by car, parking is available at several multi-storey car parks nearby including Drury Street and Jervis, though weekend evenings fill up quickly and getting in and out on foot is much easier. Taxis and rideshare drop-offs work well on the side streets adjacent to the venue.
