Eco Atlantic Adventures Summer Camps

At Multiple locations - Portsalon, Rathmullan, Downings · Portsalon, Rathmullan, Downings, Co. Donegal

Children on an adventure camp exploring Donegal's coastline with kayaks

If your child is happiest when wet, muddy, or slightly out of their comfort zone, the Eco Atlantic Adventures summer camps on Lough Swilly are worth booking early. Running from July through August at three Donegal coastal locations - Rathmullan, Portsalon and Downings - these camps pack kayaking, snorkelling, coasteering and beach exploration into week-long programmes that are active from the first morning. They suit children and teens aged 6 to 16, with age groups split so sessions are pitched at the right level.

What to expect

Eco Atlantic runs three distinct programmes. Cubs Clubs (ages 6 to 8) covers the gentler end - beach games, cave exploring and an introduction to the water that builds confidence rather than overwhelms. Kids Camps (ages 8 to 12) step it up with kayaking on Lough Swilly, snorkelling, pier jumping and coasteering along the shoreline. Teen Camps (ages 13 and over) add rock climbing and abseiling, along with more advanced water sports.

All camps are led by Canoe Ireland registered, Garda vetted instructors who carry full insurance. Wetsuits and equipment are provided, so there is no specialist kit list - just a packed lunch and a change of clothes. Sessions also weave in bushcraft basics, orienteering and environmental awareness alongside the water activities.

The Rathmullan location is well set up for this kind of work. Lough Swilly is sheltered enough that even young beginners can get on the water safely, without the swell and currents of the open Atlantic coast further north.

Getting there

Rathmullan sits on the western shore of Lough Swilly on the Fanad Peninsula, about 25 minutes north of Letterkenny and roughly an hour from Derry. Take the R245 north through Ramelton and follow signs for the village. There is no direct public transport, so a car is the practical choice. Parking is available near the beach and the roads in are straightforward once you clear Ramelton.

While you’re in Rathmullan

The village has a long sandy beach, a ruined Carmelite friary dating to 1516 and strong historical links to the Flight of the Earls in 1607. Fanad Lighthouse is a short drive north. There is more to see in Rathmullan and across Co. Donegal.
