Spraoi agus Spórt Summer Activity Camp

At Scoil Chroí Naofa and Scoil Naomh Pádraig · Carndonagh, Co. Donegal

Children participating in summer camp activities including sports, arts and crafts

Carndonagh’s own Spraoi agus Spórt has been running summer camps for children across Inishowen for years, and this eight-week programme is the flagship. It runs right through the school holidays from 29 June to 21 August, Monday to Friday, at two local primary schools in the town. If you have a child aged 6 to 12 and you are trying to keep them active, stimulated and off screens across the long summer, this is a practical option that covers a lot of ground - sports, arts and crafts, drama, music, coding, gaming, cooking, sewing and Irish language activities, all delivered by local artists and tutors. The organisation is Carndonagh-based and community-focused, not a franchise rolling in from outside.

What to expect

The daily programme mixes physical activity with creative and digital skills, so no two days run the same way. Depending on the week, children can try team sports, take part in drama workshops, experiment with 3D modelling and printing, or sit in on a Ready Steady Cook session in the kitchen. The Get Hooked Crochet Camp and Creative Stitch sessions are facilitated by a local designer. Irish language runs alongside the other activities rather than as a stand-alone lesson, which keeps it light.

The camps are described as fully inclusive, and Spraoi agus Spórt has a specific track record of running programmes for children with additional needs, so families with children who find large group settings difficult may find this more manageable than some commercial alternatives. Early drop-off and late pick-up options are available, which matters if you are working.

Pricing starts from €60 per week. The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) can cover the cost for many families - worth checking your eligibility on the NCS.gov.ie website before booking.

Getting there

Carndonagh sits roughly 25 km north of Buncrana on the Inishowen Peninsula, about 30 to 35 minutes from Letterkenny via the N13 and R238. From Derry city it is around 40 minutes via the A2 and R238. There is no direct Bus Éireann service to Carndonagh from Letterkenny, so driving or a local shuttle is the realistic option for most families. Car parking is available around the school sites in the town centre.

While you’re in Carndonagh

The town has a good market square, a handful of independent shops and cafés, and is a reasonable base for exploring the tip of the Inishowen Peninsula including Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. There is more to see in Carndonagh and across Co. Donegal.
