At STARCAMP Ballybofey & Stranorlar · Ballybofey and Stranorlar, Co. Donegal
If your children are 4 to 12 and you need something genuinely good to fill a week of the summer holidays in Donegal, STARCAMP is worth knowing about. Running in Ballybofey and Stranorlar every week through July and August, it is a performance and activity camp that has been operating nationwide since 2007. The focus is on fun over formal training - kids sing, dance, act, play games and do creative activities in a group setting, coming home tired and happy rather than drilled in scales or stagecraft.
STARCAMP runs two separate programmes side by side, so siblings of different ages can attend together. The younger group, STARCAMP, takes children aged 4 to 8 (junior infants to 2nd class) and covers singing, dancing, treasure hunts, magic, superhero adventures and teddy bear picnics. It is deliberately playful and low-pressure, designed for children who may never have done drama or performance before.
The older group, STARCREW, is for ages 8 to 12 (3rd to 6th class). The programme shifts up a gear into group performances, outdoor activities and team games, with an emphasis on building confidence, leadership and problem-solving - practical skills wrapped inside something that feels like fun. Hip hop, acting and dance all feature across both strands.
Sibling discounts and multi-week booking discounts are available when booked together online, which takes some of the sting out of covering two age groups.
Ballybofey and Stranorlar sit in the Finn Valley in central Donegal, on either side of the River Finn - the two towns are linked by a bridge and often treated as one. From Donegal Town it is roughly 40 minutes north on the N15 and N13. From Derry it is about 45 minutes south-west on the N13. Bus Eireann serves the Finn Valley corridor with connections to Letterkenny and Donegal Town. Parking in both towns is straightforward, with spaces available on the main streets and in surface car parks.
The Finn Valley has its own appeal beyond the camp drop-off. Drumboe Woods on the edge of Stranorlar is a short riverside walk with fairy doors and carved wooden sculptures that younger children find genuinely magical. The Balor Arts Centre in Ballybofey runs a year-round programme including summer events. Glenveagh National Park is less than an hour away for a bigger day out. There is more to see in Donegal and across Co. Donegal.
