Buncrana Music Festival

At Shore Front, Buncrana · Shore Front, Buncrana, Co. Donegal

Buncrana Music Festival 2026

Every July the Shore Front at Buncrana fills with music, and the festival that takes over this stretch of Inishowen coastline has now been doing it for nine years running. The Buncrana Music Festival is a proper three-day event - Friday through Sunday - with a Big Top tent pitched right on the waterfront overlooking Lough Swilly. It suits people who want a full weekend away rather than a single night out: there is on-site camping, a funfair, bars, and food vendors, so you can arrive Friday and not leave until Sunday evening.

What to expect

Friday night opens the festival with a party atmosphere that gets the weekend going. Saturday is designated Irish Day, with a line-up of Irish acts including Gary Óg, the Irish Brigade, Shea Doolin, Katelin Tierney, Eimhear Ní Ghlacaín, and Letterkenny’s own Jack Gill. It is the day that draws the biggest local crowd, and the tent takes on a session-like energy despite the size of the stage. Sunday pulls in international names - Ryan McMullan and Dear Willow are confirmed headliners - and tends to draw people who arrived for the weekend rather than a single day. The Big Top seats a large crowd but stays close enough to the water that you can hear the Swilly when the music pauses. Camping and campervan pitches are on site, and there is a funfair for families with children.

Getting there

Buncrana sits on the western shore of the Inishowen Peninsula, roughly 35 kilometres north of Letterkenny. From Letterkenny, take the N13 towards Derry and pick up the R238 north at Bridgend - the road follows the shore of Lough Swilly for the final stretch into town, and the festival site on the Shore Front is unmissable once you arrive. From Derry city, the route crosses into Donegal at Bridgend and takes around 30 minutes. Bus Éireann serves Letterkenny from Dublin and Sligo; from Letterkenny, local services and taxis connect to Buncrana. Street parking along the Shore Front fills quickly on festival days, so arriving early or using town-centre car parks and walking down makes the most sense.

While you’re in Buncrana

Buncrana is one of the main towns on Inishowen, with a beach, the ruins of O’Doherty’s Keep, and the restored Swan Park on the edge of town - all worth an hour if you are up early on a festival morning. The peninsula stretches north to Malin Head, the most northerly point in Ireland, and the drive there and back takes in coastal scenery that is hard to match anywhere in the country. There is more to see in Buncrana and across Co. Donegal.
