Clondalkin Round Tower Festival 2026

At Clondalkin Village · Clondalkin, Dublin 22

Clondalkin Round Tower Festival

Clondalkin may sit well inside the Dublin commuter belt, but the village has one of the most impressive pieces of early medieval architecture in the country standing at its centre. The Round Tower Festival - running across five days in late July - brings that heritage alive with a programme of historical tours, live music, food stalls, and community events, all centred on an 8th-century tower that has been standing longer than most of Europe’s cathedrals. It is the kind of local festival that Dublin does well: genuinely free, genuinely varied, and accessible without any prior interest in history.

What to expect

The focal point is the Round Tower itself - 25.6 metres of tapering stone, built around 790 AD on the site of a monastery founded by Saint Mochua in the 7th century. It is the most slender surviving round tower in Ireland, and it still has its original cap. The tower stands within the Brú Chrónáin complex, which includes a visitor centre with an interactive museum, a garden planted with trees and herbs that would have been familiar to early Christian monks, a café, and a terraced dining area.

Over the festival week, the grounds and surrounding village host guided heritage tours of the tower and its monastic history, including the stories of Viking raids in the 9th and 10th centuries when the settlement was plundered in 832 and 865 AD. Expect live music performances, food vendors and community stalls alongside the historical programming. The event is deliberately family-friendly, so children are very much part of the picture. Specific acts and timings for the 2026 programme had not been published at the time of writing - check the Clondalkin Village social channels or the South Dublin County Council events listings as the date approaches.

Getting there

Clondalkin is about 12 km southwest of Dublin city centre, easily reached by public transport. The Luas Red Line runs a direct service; the Clondalkin - Fonthill stop is roughly 20 to 25 minutes from Connolly or the city centre stops, and the village is a short walk from there. Several Dublin Bus routes also serve the area, including services along the Naas Road corridor. By car, Clondalkin is just off the M50 at Junction 9; parking in the village is available on side streets, though it fills quickly during events.

While you’re in Clondalkin

The Round Tower is not the only reason to linger - the village has a compact historic core worth a slow walk, and the Brú Chrónáin café is a decent stop even outside festival days. There is more to see in Clondalkin and across Co. Dublin.
