At River Liffey · Dublin Bridge to Islandbridge, Co. Dublin
One of Ireland’s most enduring paddling spectacles, the Liffey Descent sends hundreds of canoeists and kayakers down a 30-plus kilometre stretch of the River Liffey from Straffan in Co. Kildare to the finish at the Garda Boat Club in Islandbridge, Dublin. First held in 1961, the race has grown into an international fixture drawing club paddlers and seasoned whitewater racers alike. If you have never watched canoes shoot a weir at pace, this is one of those mornings you will not forget.
The course negotiates ten weirs and one mandatory portage, with the action concentrated in stretches that locals know well - the flat reservoir paddle through Leixlip, technical drops at Lucan, Wren’s Nest, and Chapelizod, and the final run into Islandbridge. Boats range from sleek K1 racing kayaks to open canoes and doubles, with categories for juniors, over-39s, and mixed crews, so the field is genuinely varied.
Spectators have several good vantage points along the route - Celbridge, Lucan Bridge, and Palmerstown are traditional viewing spots where you can watch multiple boats come through in quick succession. The atmosphere is relaxed; paddling clubs bring tents, families line the banks, and there is usually a good crowd at each weir. The finish at Islandbridge is the place for results and the post-race buzz.
Entry is through the Irish Canoe Union. Competitors enter a boat class based on their craft’s dimensions, and juniors require signed parental consent.
The finish at Islandbridge is in west Dublin, a short distance from the city centre. The 25 and 26 bus routes serve the area, or a 10-minute taxi from the Quays puts you at the riverbank. By car, Islandbridge is well signed from the South Circular Road; parking along Memorial Road fills quickly on busy Sundays, so arriving early or using Phoenix Park car parks and walking in works well.
Islandbridge sits alongside the Irish National War Memorial Gardens, a beautifully maintained riverside park worth a stroll before or after the race. The Phoenix Park is a ten-minute walk north. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
