Dublin Horse Show 2026

At Royal Dublin Society (RDS) · Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

Dublin Horse Show 2026

The Dublin Horse Show is one of the oldest surviving sporting events in Ireland, running continuously at the RDS in Ballsbridge since 1881. It draws over 110,000 visitors across five days each August and holds a place in the social calendar that goes well beyond equestrian sport. If horses interest you even mildly, or you simply want a proper day out with a grandstand, a glass in hand, and something genuinely dramatic happening in front of you, this is worth the trip. Families, racing enthusiasts, and fashion-watchers all find their own reason to go.

What to expect

The show runs from Tuesday 5 August to Saturday 9 August 2026 at the RDS Arena grounds. Each day is structured around a mix of competitions. Early in the week the focus is on breeding and showing classes - hunters, young horses, and ponies assessed on conformation and movement. The international show jumping begins to dominate from Wednesday, building towards Saturday’s Nations Cup day, which is the centrepiece of the whole event.

The Nations Cup - officially the Aga Khan Trophy - has been contested at the show since 1926, when six countries first competed for it. The 2026 running marks 100 years of the competition, which brings an extra layer of significance. National teams of four riders jump two rounds each; the combined faults determine the winner. Ireland competing on home ground in front of a full RDS crowd is its own kind of occasion.

Thursday is traditionally Ladies’ Day, a tradition that started in 1919 when women’s jumping classes were introduced. It has developed over the decades into one of the most photographed days on the Irish summer calendar. The wider show also includes a lifestyle village with over 350 exhibitors, covering food, fashion, equestrian trade stands, and crafts. The prize fund across the week exceeds EUR 1.3 million.

Getting there

The RDS is in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, roughly 2km south of the city centre. The DART stops at Lansdowne Road (a short walk). Several Dublin Bus routes serve the area from the city, including routes along Merrion Road and Northumberland Road. During the Horse Show week, services are typically busier than normal, so allow extra time. Driving is possible - the RDS has on-site parking - but Ballsbridge fills up quickly on busy days, particularly for the Nations Cup on Saturday. Public transport is the straightforward choice.

While you’re in Ballsbridge

Ballsbridge has some of Dublin’s better restaurants and hotels clustered around the embassy quarter, and the Grand Canal is a short walk away if you want somewhere quieter before or after the show. There is more to see in Ballsbridge and across Co. Dublin.
