Junior Einsteins Science Club brings its five-day summer camp to Tuam this July, giving children aged 5 to 12 a week of proper hands-on science rather than passive screen time. Each morning session runs from 10am to 2pm, long enough for kids to get genuinely stuck in but still leaving the afternoon free for family plans. It suits primary-school-age children with any level of science knowledge - the programme is designed for curious beginners and enthusiastic experimenters alike.
The camp covers a broad sweep of STEM topics over the five days. Children work through chemistry experiments including slime science and exothermic reactions, build and programme simple robots, and carry out activities like DNA extraction and crystal growing that feel far closer to real laboratory work than typical holiday-camp craft projects. There are also dramatic crowd-pleasers - giant smoke cannons, volcanic eruptions, cola and mentos explosions - which tend to land particularly well with reluctant scientists. Engineering challenges such as marble run races and bridge building round out the week. Junior Einsteins runs camps at venues across Ireland and the format is tight and well-practised; the ratio of mess to learning is high, which is usually the right balance for this age group.
The Tuam session is held at the Family Resource Centre on Dublin Road, a community facility that has hosted events for families in the area for years. Spaces are limited to around twelve children per session, so the group size stays manageable and instructors can give individual attention.
Tuam sits on the N17, about 30 kilometres north of Galway city, and is straightforward to reach by car from most of Connacht. From Galway, follow the N17 north through Claregalway; the journey takes roughly 30 minutes in normal traffic. From Roscommon or Mayo, the N17 runs through the town directly. Bus Éireann operates services between Galway and Tuam on the 423 route, with several departures each morning - useful if you are travelling from the city. The Family Resource Centre on Dublin Road has free on-site parking, so dropping children off by car is simple.
Tuam is one of the larger market towns in east Galway and has a good range of cafés and shops along its main street - worth knowing if you are filling the four hours while the camp runs. The Cathedral of the Assumption and the high cross at the town square are worth a look. There is more to see in Tuam and across Co. Galway.
