At Salthill Hotel - Blackrock Bar · Salthill, Galway City, Co. Galway
Galway Races Week is one of the great social events in the Irish calendar, and the Salthill Hotel’s Blackrock Bar makes the most of it. Every evening from Wednesday to Sunday (27 July to 2 August 2026), the bar runs live music until midnight - a proper wind-down after a day at Ballybrit, or a good option if the racing itself isn’t your thing. The bar draws a mix of hotel guests and locals, and the seafront setting along Salthill Promenade gives it a different feel to the busier spots nearer the city centre.
The Blackrock Bar is a roomy pub with carved woodwork, upholstered seating and a terrace looking out over Galway Bay. Music runs nightly from 10pm to midnight, with a different act each evening:
The bar also puts on limited-edition Races Week cocktails for the occasion. Food is served across the hotel’s dining areas. The crowd tends to be lively but not rowdy - more celebratory than nightclub territory.
Salthill sits about 2km west of Galway city centre along the south shore of Galway Bay. Bus Eireann and City Direct services run regularly from the city centre - about ten minutes. By car from the M6/N6 follow signs into Galway and take the coastal road south-west; the hotel is on the seafront with free parking on site, a real advantage during Races Week when city parking fills fast. Taxis from Ballybrit Racecourse to Salthill are easy after the racing.
The promenade walk is one of Galway’s best free pleasures - the tradition of “kicking the wall” at the end is taken seriously. Blackrock diving tower is a short stroll away and worth a look whether or not you fancy a jump. There is more to see in Salthill and across Co. Galway.
