The Garage Theatre’s Teen Summer Drama Camp is a five-day programme for young people aged 13 to 18 who want to get stuck into acting in a proper theatre environment. It runs across the afternoons of the first full week of July, and the pace is practical rather than classroom-based - teens learn by doing, with the goal being a showcase performance on the final day. If your teenager has an interest in performance but has never had a structured outlet for it, this is a well-established route in.
Each afternoon session runs from 2pm to 5pm, giving participants three focused hours of work on acting, stage skills and creativity. The camp is not a passive experience - teens rehearse, collaborate and take direction over the course of the week before presenting their work in a showcase on the Friday. The Garage Theatre runs Monaghan Youth Theatre as an ongoing programme split into junior, intermediate and senior groups, so the staff here know how to work with teenagers in a theatre context. The camp runs concurrently with a junior morning camp for younger children, so siblings on different programmes can both attend the same week. The Garage Theatre sits on the Monaghan Education Campus on the Armagh Road, on the northern edge of Monaghan town. It is straightforward to reach by car from most parts of the county and from the border towns - the N2 brings you into Monaghan from Dublin or Derry, and the N54 connects Cavan and Clones. The venue has 300 free car parking spaces on site, so dropping off and collecting is simple. Bus Eireann serves Monaghan town from Dublin, Cavan and surrounding areas for those coming without a car.
