At Glasnevin Cemetery · Finglas Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 11
Glasnevin Cemetery is Ireland’s national cemetery, the final resting place of over 1.5 million people including some of the most significant figures in Irish history. Daily guided tours run throughout the year, offering an unmissable window into the story of Ireland itself through the lives of those buried here: Daniel O’Connell, Michael Collins, Eamon de Valera, Brendan Behan, Countess Markievicz, Charles Stewart Parnell and many more.
The Irish History Tour runs daily at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 2:30pm, with an additional 12:30pm tour at weekends. Each tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and is led by expert guides who bring the stories of Ireland’s past vividly to life, exploring key moments including the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War and the broader sweep of Irish political and social history. The tour ticket includes admission to the Experience Glasnevin Exhibition, and an optional O’Connell Tower climb is also available.
Adjacent to the cemetery, the Glasnevin Museum provides further context with its immersive exhibitions. A 2.5km walking trail from the city centre connects Dublin’s northside to the cemetery, making it a rewarding destination to reach on foot.
Glasnevin Cemetery is served by Dublin Bus routes 40 and 40D from O’Connell Street, and routes 4 and 9 from the south city centre. There is a car park at the cemetery entrance. A 2.5km suggested walking trail from the city centre is described on the Dublin Cemeteries Trust website.
