What to Expect

Every Monday evening, Killarney Parish holds Mass and the novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour at 6:15pm in St Mary’s Cathedral on New Street. The novena is a set sequence of prayers said in honour of Our Lady under this title, woven into the regular evening Mass rather than run as a standalone devotion, so it has the shape and pace of a normal weekday liturgy with the novena prayers added in. It is one of the parish’s longest-running weekly devotions, drawing a mix of regulars who attend most Mondays and visitors passing through Killarney who time their evening around it. There is no sign-up and no need to attend every week, people come and go from the novena as they wish, and it sits alongside the parish’s other regular devotions, including its own annual novena to St Therese of Lisieux each September and its Easter and Christmas ceremonies, all centred on the cathedral.

St Mary’s Cathedral itself is the seat of the Diocese of Kerry and the parish’s principal church, a neo-Gothic limestone building on New Street dating from the nineteenth century, and it is where Killarney Parish concentrates almost all of its scheduled devotional life rather than spreading services across its smaller chapels.

Getting There

St Mary’s Cathedral sits on New Street in Killarney town centre, a short walk from the town’s main car parks and the bus and rail station. On-street parking and the nearby Cathedral car park serve evening Mass-goers, and the cathedral grounds back onto Killarney National Park, so many visitors combine the novena with an evening walk in the park beforehand.
