At Kerry County Museum · Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street, Tralee, Co. Kerry
Kerry County Museum occupies Ashe Memorial Hall on Tralee’s Denny Street, and it remains open to visitors even as a major restoration project works through the rest of the building. Two permanent galleries, the Medieval Experience and the Archaeology Hall, stay open on the standard Tuesday to Saturday schedule. The museum says every other gallery is closed for the Ashe Memorial Hall Restoration Project, running from 2026 to 2028, so this is a scaled-back but still worthwhile visit rather than the museum’s full usual offering.
The Medieval Experience walks visitors through Tralee’s Anglo-Norman origins and medieval town life, while the Archaeology Hall covers County Kerry’s story from the Stone Age onward, through tools, weapons and everyday objects recovered from bogs, fields and building sites across the county over the past two centuries. Kerry County Museum first opened in the early 1990s inside Ashe Memorial Hall, a building that already carried its own layer of local history as a civic hall named for 1916 leader Thomas Ashe. Because the wider redevelopment is under way, temporary exhibitions and some of the museum’s other permanent displays are off view for now, so what is on offer is a shorter but focused visit rather than a full afternoon. Staff can advise on which galleries are open on the day before you travel, and school tours continue to run through 2026 around the restoration work.
Denny Street sits in the middle of Tralee town centre, a short walk from the bus and rail station, the terminus of the Dublin to Tralee railway line. Kerry Airport at Farranfore is about 16km away. Parking is available in the town’s central car parks, a few minutes’ walk from the museum.
Tralee is Kerry’s county town, and a visit to the museum pairs easily with the rest of what the town has to offer, from the Rose of Tralee festival grounds to Siamsa Tíre a short walk away. There is more to see in Tralee and across Co. Kerry.
