Long before Puck Fair became a festival of music and street entertainment, it was a working horse and cattle fair, and that trading tradition still opens the three days every August. On Gathering Day, Monday 10 August 2026, a horse fair runs from early morning at Evans’ Field on the Tralee Road, with horses, ponies and tack bought and sold much as they always have been. The following morning, Fair Day, a cattle fair takes over Langford Street under a charter granted by King James I in 1613, making it one of the oldest fairs still held in Ireland.
Both fairs run early, before the festival’s music and entertainment programme gets going later in the day, so the atmosphere is closer to a working country fair than a festival crowd. At the horse fair, dealers and buyers walk animals up and down Evans’ Field, checking gait and conformation the way horse fairs have worked for generations; at the cattle fair on Langford Street, stock is shown and sold on the street itself, a rare survival of the old-style town fair now that most livestock trading happens through marts. Both fairs are free to walk around and watch, and they give Puck Fair’s opening days a very different character from the crowds who arrive later for King Puck’s coronation and the evening’s music.
Killorglin is on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, about 20km west of Killarney and 22km southwest of Tralee. Evans’ Field is on the Tralee Road on the edge of town, while Langford Street is in the town centre; both are within walking distance of each other and of the main car parks used during the festival.
Killorglin’s whole town turns over to Puck Fair for these three days, so the horse and cattle fairs are best combined with a walk around the stalls, music and King Puck’s stand on the town bridge. There is more to see in Killorglin and across Co. Kerry.
