Every first Tuesday of the month, a small group of young readers aged 8 to 12 pulls up a chair at Castlecomer Library and gets down to the serious business of talking about books. This is the Castlecomer Kids Book Club, run by Kilkenny County Council Library Service - a free, friendly session where children can say exactly what they thought of a story, hear what their peers made of it, and pick up their next read. It suits children who already love books and those who are just getting into them; there is no pressure and no homework.
Sessions run at 3:30pm and follow the informal rhythm typical of well-run library book clubs: children discuss a shared or self-chosen book, swap recommendations, and meet other young readers from around the north Kilkenny area. The library staff who run these clubs are experienced at drawing out quieter voices and keeping discussion lively without it becoming a classroom exercise. Castlecomer Library is also known locally for its Lego Club and other children’s activities, so the space and the team are well practised at making kids feel at home. Membership of the library is free for children under 14, so joining is as straightforward as signing up at the desk.
Castlecomer sits about 19 kilometres north of Kilkenny city, on the R694. By car from Kilkenny, follow the N77 north and take the R694 turnoff towards Castlecomer - it is a straightforward drive of roughly 20 minutes. Bus Éireann route 833 connects Kilkenny city centre to Castlecomer, with a journey time of around 30 minutes; check current timetables at buseireann.ie before travelling. The library is on Kilkenny Street, opposite the Roman Catholic Church, right in the centre of the town. There is free on-street parking directly outside.
