Toddler Story and Crafts at Castlecomer Library

At Castlecomer Library · Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny

Toddler story time and crafts at Castlecomer Library

Every month, Castlecomer Library opens its doors for a free afternoon of storytelling and hands-on crafts aimed squarely at toddlers and young children. It is the sort of event that makes a Wednesday afternoon genuinely worthwhile - a chance for little ones to hear a good story read aloud, then get stuck in with paint, paper, glue, or whatever the craft of the day happens to be. Parents and carers are very much welcome to stay and join in, making it as much a social occasion for grown-ups as an activity for the children.

What to expect

The session combines two things toddlers tend to love: listening to stories and making something with their hands. A member of the library team leads the storytelling portion, choosing picture books suited to young ears, before the group moves into a simple, guided craft project that ties in with the theme or the season. The format is relaxed - nobody is marking for neatness - and the atmosphere is warm and unhurried. Sessions run on a monthly basis, making it easy to plan ahead and build into a regular routine. The library is fully wheelchair accessible, so the space works for buggies and prams without any fuss. Children under 14 can join the library for free, which opens up a wider world of books and resources beyond the monthly events.

Getting there

Castlecomer sits on the R694, about 19 kilometres north of Kilkenny city. If you are driving from Kilkenny, the road runs straight through Freshford and into the town. The library is on Kilkenny Street, opposite the Roman Catholic Church - it is a compact town and straightforward to find once you are in the centre. Street parking is available in and around the town square, a short walk from the library. Bus Eireann serves Castlecomer on routes linking Kilkenny with Carlow and Athy, so the town is reachable without a car, though services are infrequent, so it pays to check times in advance.

While you’re in Castlecomer

After the session, Castlecomer Discovery Park is worth the short walk - 80 acres of woodland and lakes, a mining museum, craft studios, and plenty of outdoor space for children to burn off any remaining energy. There is more to see in Castlecomer and across Co. Kilkenny.
