GVM Kilmallock Mart - Monday Livestock Sale

GVM Kilmallock Mart runs its main weekly cattle sale every Monday, drawing farmers and buyers from across south Limerick and into north Cork and Tipperary. Three auction rings run at once, split by animal type and age, which is what lets the mart clear a large weekly throughput of calves, weanlings and finished cattle in a single morning. It is a working livestock market rather than a visitor attraction, but Monday mornings in Kilmallock are shaped around it, with trailers and jeeps lining the roads into town from early on.

What to expect

Ring 1 sells weanling bulls and bullocks from 11am, with cattle intake from 8am. Ring 2 handles calves and runners from 10.30am, with calf intake from 7am. Ring 3 runs dry cows, factory bulls, dairy stock, sucklers and weanling heifers, also from 11am. Buyers and sellers move between rings depending on what they are there for, and the mart also runs periodic society sales and organic sales through the year on top of the regular Monday fixture. It is run by GVM Group, one of the auctioneering firms operating livestock marts across Limerick and the wider Golden Vale, and weekly trade reports are published on its website after each sale.

Getting there

Kilmallock is about 26km south of Limerick city on the R512, roughly midway between Limerick and Mitchelstown. The mart is on the edge of the town, with on-site parking for farmers bringing stock in trailers, and it is well signposted from the main road through Kilmallock.
