At Multiple galleries across Belfast · Various locations, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Every first Thursday of the month, Belfast’s galleries stay open well into the evening and the city gets a rare chance to see contemporary art on its own terms - no rush, no entrance fee, no obligation to buy. Late Night Art Belfast is a long-running city initiative that brings together galleries and artist studios across the city for four hours of free after-hours access. It suits anyone who works office hours and rarely gets near a gallery before it closes, as well as visitors who want to see Belfast’s creative side without booking a ticket or planning far ahead. The July edition falls on Thursday 2 July 2026.
From 6pm to 10pm, a spread of Belfast’s galleries and studios unlock their doors for the evening. Participating venues have included the Golden Thread Gallery on Queen Street - Belfast’s leading contemporary art space, with two large galleries, a projection room and Northern Ireland’s first visual art library - as well as the Crescent Arts Centre and Digital Arts Studios, among others. The 2026 series is curated by Conall McCauley, who works with Belfast-based artists to bring themed hands-on activities alongside the gallery visits, so the evening tends to mix looking with making. Media across the programme includes painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, craft, video and performance. The full list of participating venues each month is published on the Late Night Art social channels and the Belfast Art Map (belfartmap.com), which you can pick up at cultural and tourism venues around the city.
Belfast is well served by road and rail. Trains run regularly from Dublin Connolly to Belfast Lanyon Place (roughly two hours), and from Derry/Londonderry via the northern coastal route. Enterprise intercity services connect both capitals several times daily. From within Northern Ireland, Translink bus and rail services link most towns to Great Victoria Street or Europa Bus Centre in the city centre. If you are driving, the M1 and M2 motorways feed into the city quickly, and there is multi-storey parking at Cathedral Quarter, Castle Court and Victoria Square. Most of the Late Night Art venues cluster within walking distance of the city centre, so leaving the car at one spot and walking between galleries is straightforward.
The city has a lot going on beyond the gallery circuit - the Cathedral Quarter has a dense run of independent bars and restaurants, the Titanic Quarter is a short walk or bus from the centre, and the covered Victorian arcades off Royal Avenue are worth a wander. There is more to see in Belfast and across Co. Antrim.
