Thirty years is a long time to keep an artists’ collective going, and Bridge Street Studios in Dundalk has managed exactly that. Founded in 1996 and based in a 250-year-old grain store on Bridge Street, it has quietly become one of the oldest and largest independent studio collectives in Ireland. This summer, the group is marking three decades of shared practice with a touring exhibition that lands at Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda on 27 June and stays through to 22 August - a long and generous run that gives you the whole summer to get there.
The exhibition is titled “The Things That Matter Most are the Things That Can’t Be Seen” and brings together eight professional artists from the collective: Orlaith Cullinane, Rachel Tinniswood, Mary Cowan, Suzanne Carroll, Caóilfíonn Murphy O’Hanlon, Orla Barry, Sarah McKenna, and Fiona Quigley. The work spans painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and installation - a genuine spread of disciplines that reflects the breadth of practice the studios have housed over three decades. The title points toward something intangible and felt rather than literal, and the work tends in that direction: pieces that sit with you rather than announce themselves.
The show opened earlier in 2026 at An Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk before travelling south to Drogheda. Droichead Arts Centre on Stockwell Street has a clean, well-lit gallery space that suits group shows like this - enough room to let the different voices breathe without crowding.
Drogheda is on the main Dublin to Belfast rail line, with regular services from Connolly Station taking around 45 minutes. By road it is just off the M1, about 50 kilometres north of Dublin - a straightforward drive. The town centre is compact and walkable from the train station. Street parking is available around Stockwell Street, or there are pay-and-display car parks nearby in the town centre.
