Part costume ball, part community dance night, part absurdist celebration - Clown Prom is exactly the kind of event Limerick does well. Organised by Traffic Light in collaboration with Limerick Alternative Pride, this is an inclusive night out aimed squarely at the LGBTQ+ community and anyone who wants to dress up, let loose, and dance at The Wickham on Wickham Street. If you have ever wanted an excuse to dust off a ruff collar or paint your face white, this is it.
The night runs from 8:00pm and the dress code is your finest clown or jester attire - think big shoes, striped socks, rainbow wigs, or whatever your interpretation of the brief happens to be. Two prizes are up for grabs on the night: Prom Clown and Prom Jester, so there is real incentive to commit to the look. A free photobooth is available to capture you and your prom date in full regalia, which makes for a decent memento.
The Wickham, at 11 Wickham Street, is one of Limerick’s well-established live music and craft beer venues, and it suits this kind of event well - small enough to feel like a proper party, with a sound system that can handle a proper dance floor. Tickets are €10 and bookable via Eventbrite through the listing on Limerick.ie.
Limerick city is straightforward to reach by road: the M7 connects from Dublin (roughly two hours), the N20 from Cork (under two hours), and the N18 from Galway (just over an hour). Iarnród Éireann runs direct trains from Dublin Heuston to Limerick, with the journey taking around two hours; Bus Éireann serves the city from most major towns. The Wickham is on Wickham Street in the city centre, a short walk from Limerick train station and well within the city’s main pub and venue quarter. Street parking is available nearby in the evenings, and there are several pay car parks within a few minutes on foot.
July is a good month to be in the city - long evenings, and plenty going on along the riverside and in the surrounding area. There is more to see in Limerick and across Co. Limerick.
