Opry Le Daniel

At Millennium Forum · Newmarket Street, Derry, Co. Derry

Opry Le Daniel

Opry le Daniel is the TG4 country music concert series that has built a loyal following across Ireland - and this June it comes to Derry’s Millennium Forum for three nights of live recordings. Daniel O’Donnell hosts the show, and the format mixes musical themes with a rotating roster of special guests, all recorded in front of a real audience. It is a proper night out rather than a straightforward concert: you become part of the television audience while getting a polished live performance.

What to expect

Each evening at the Millennium Forum runs two shows, and each show has its own theme and its own guests. The opening night on Tuesday 30 June launches with a New Opry set featuring Damian Davis, Effie Neill and Ruairidh Gray, followed by a Country n Irish show bringing Margo, New York-based Andy Cooney and Caitriona Ní Cheannabháin to the stage alongside Daniel. Across the three nights the line-up shifts through country, folk and contemporary styles, with names including Sean Keane, Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan, Donna Taggart, Rachel Goode and Simon Casey all scheduled to appear. Tickets are £25 and can be booked directly through the Millennium Forum box office - phone 028 7126 4455 or check their website.

The Millennium Forum itself is a 1,000-seat purpose-built theatre on Newmarket Street, opened in 2001 as the first dedicated theatre in the city. The acoustics suit this kind of recording well - expect a warm atmosphere and a professionally run evening.

Getting there

Derry sits in the north-west, accessible by road on the A6 from Belfast (roughly 70 miles) and the N13/A5 from Dublin via Letterkenny. Bus Éireann and Translink run regular services into the city from Sligo, Letterkenny and Belfast. The nearest train station is Derry (Waterside), served by Northern Ireland Railways from Belfast Central, with connecting buses into the city centre. The Millennium Forum is a short walk from the bus station on Foyle Street. Parking is available in the Foyleside Shopping Centre multi-storey directly adjacent to the venue, and in several surface car parks nearby on John Street and Orchard Street.

While you’re in Derry

The city makes a good overnight stop - the walled city is one of the best-preserved in Europe, and the Bogside murals, the Peace Bridge and the Cathedral Quarter are all within easy walking distance of the Millennium Forum. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
