At Lime Tree Theatre · Mary Immaculate College, Courtbrack Avenue, Limerick
Eva O’Connor’s For Dolores is the kind of Irish play that travels well - it premiered at Galway International Arts Festival before touching down in Limerick, then continues to Dublin and Edinburgh. That it stops at the Belltable says something about the venue’s reach: this is one of the most talked-about new productions of 2026, and Limerick gets it fresh off the premiere. If you follow Irish theatre, or you simply want a night out that does not ask you to switch off your brain, this is worth the diary entry.
For Dolores is written and performed by Eva O’Connor, one of the sharpest voices in contemporary Irish theatre, and directed by Jim Culleton of Fishamble: The New Play Company. The story follows Mo, a Scot, and Realtín, an Irish woman, from their student years in Edinburgh through to their adult lives in Glasgow - tracking a friendship, a rivalry and the kind of moral recklessness that looks thrilling until it detonates. O’Connor brings her trademark dark comedy to it: the writing is fast, surprising and never lets either character off the hook. The cast is Lara McDonnell and Catriona Faint. Expect a tight, two-hander run-time and the particular atmosphere of the Belltable at its best - an intimate 220-seat space where the acting lands close.
Limerick is well served by road and rail. The Belltable is at 69 O’Connell Street, right in the centre of the city, so you can walk from Limerick Colbert Station in around 10 minutes. By car, the city is on the M7 from Dublin (roughly two hours) and the M20 from Cork (about an hour). Street parking is available on O’Connell Street and surrounding streets in the evening, and the Arthur’s Quay car park is a short walk from the venue.
Limerick’s city centre repays an extra hour before curtain - the Hunt Museum, the Treaty Stone, and the riverfront all sit within easy reach of the Belltable. There is more to see in Limerick and across Co. Limerick.
