Strictly Ballroom IFI@Belltable

At Belltable · Belltable Arts Centre, 69 O'Connell Street, Limerick

Strictly Ballroom at Belltable

Baz Luhrmann’s 1992 debut film gets the big-screen treatment it deserves at Limerick’s Belltable, in a newly released 4K restoration. Strictly Ballroom tells the story of Scott, a gifted competitive dancer who ditches the rulebook to partner with novice Fran - and in doing so upends the world of Australian ballroom. It is a film bursting with colour, theatrical swagger, and a soundtrack that lodges in your head for days. If you have only ever seen it on a small screen, seeing it restored and projected properly is a genuine revelation. This is a Monday evening well spent.

What to expect

The screening is part of IFI@Belltable, the long-running partnership between the Irish Film Institute and Belltable that brings cultural cinema to Limerick each month. The programme favours carefully curated titles - retrospectives, restorations, and award-winning international work - rather than mainstream multiplex fare. Belltable holds around 220 seats and has a reputation as an intimate, attentive cinema environment. Monday IFI@Belltable screenings at 5pm typically include open captions where possible, so check directly with the box office if that matters to you. The 4K restoration of Strictly Ballroom runs 94 minutes, rated G.

Getting there

Belltable sits at 69 O’Connell Street, right on Limerick’s main thoroughfare, so it is as central as it gets. Bus Eireann services run directly through O’Connell Street from Limerick Bus Station, which is a short walk away. If you are travelling by train, Limerick Colbert Station is about a 15-minute walk or a quick taxi ride from the venue. Driving into the city centre, there are multi-storey car parks at Parkway Shopping Centre and Arthur’s Quay nearby - street parking in the city centre is metered and limited in the evenings, so the car parks are generally the simpler option.

While you’re in Limerick

A Monday evening at Belltable pairs well with an early dinner along O’Connell Street or in the nearby lanes around Thomas Street, where you will find a good mix of local restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the venue. There is more to see in Limerick and across Co. Limerick.
