At Longford Agricultural Show Grounds · Enybegs, Co. Longford
One of the oldest continuous rural gatherings in the country, the Longford Agricultural Show has been drawing farmers, families, and curious townspeople together for well over a century. Held on a Sunday in early July at Treanlawn in Killoe, beside Enybegs village, it is the kind of day that gives urban visitors a genuine look at what County Longford does and has always done: raise livestock, grow things, make things, and come together. If you have never been to an agricultural show, this is a good one to start with. If you go every year, you already know why.
The show opens at 10am and the grounds fill steadily through the morning. Livestock judging is the backbone of the day - cattle and sheep classes draw serious competitors from around the county and beyond, while showjumping adds pace and colour for spectators who enjoy watching horse and rider work a course together.
The crafts marquee is well worth an hour of anyone’s time. With more than 100 exhibitors and around 600 exhibits, it covers a wide spread - jams, honey, photography, patchwork, turf, and baked goods among them. The ICA runs a cafe on the grounds, which means you can sit down with a cup of tea and a slice of something homemade while the children run off steam on the bouncy castles. Face painting and a tug of war are reliably popular, and live music keeps the atmosphere up through the afternoon. Multiple food stalls cover lunch and beyond.
Enybegs is a short drive from Longford town, which sits on the N4 Dublin to Sligo road - about 130 km from Dublin and 180 km from Galway. The N4 is a well-maintained national primary route and the drive from Dublin takes roughly ninety minutes. Bus Eireann runs regular services between Dublin and Longford town, from where a local taxi or car would get you to the show grounds. Parking at agricultural shows of this size is typically in adjacent fields; follow signs on the day and allow a few extra minutes to walk from the car park to the entrance.
The show at Killoe is set in a quiet stretch of county farmland, but Longford town is only a few kilometres away and worth a look before or after - the town has a good range of cafes and a handsome cathedral. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
