Carrickedmond vs Longford Slashers

At Glennon Brothers Pearse Park · Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford, Co. Longford

Longford GAA fixture

Saturday evening football in Longford town - Carrickedmond take on Longford Slashers in Round 1 of Senior Football Championship Group B. If you want to catch competitive Gaelic football in a proper county ground, free of charge, this is a good fixture to put in the diary. Carrickedmond are a south Longford club with roots going back to the 1890s, while Longford Slashers are one of the county’s best-known town clubs. Both have genuine ambitions in the championship, which makes early group rounds worth watching - teams tend to come out with something to prove.

What to expect

The match takes place at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford’s county headquarters, which holds around 10,000. For a club championship fixture on a July evening the crowd will be a local one - families, club members, and followers of Longford football. The ground has a proper stand and decent sightlines from the terrace. Kick-off is at 7pm, so there is good light and you are usually clear before dark. This is Group B, Round 1, so both clubs will be treating it as a must-not-lose - expect a competitive, physical game with plenty of crowd involvement. Bring a jacket if the evening turns cool; July in Longford can go either way.

Getting there

Longford town sits on the N4 Dublin - Sligo national primary road, roughly 120km north-west of Dublin. It is also on the Dublin Heuston - Sligo rail line, with regular trains through the day - Longford station is about a 15-minute walk from Pearse Park, or a short taxi ride. Bus Éireann runs services from Dublin and surrounding towns. If you are driving, follow signs for the GAA grounds - parking is available on site and on surrounding roads. For an evening fixture it fills quickly, so arriving 20 minutes before throw-in is sensible.

While you’re in Longford

Longford town has a handful of good pubs and places to eat near the main street - worth a pre-match meal if you are coming from further away. The county has quiet drumlin lakes and the Royal Canal greenway running through it. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
