An evening club hurling championship match between two of Longford’s most storied GAA clubs, this fixture at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park is the kind of game that county GAA followers mark in the diary early. Longford Slashers and Clonguish Gaels have a long and competitive history in the Longford Senior Hurling Championship - Slashers have won it 12 times, and Clonguish Gaels have their own proud record, including five county titles in hurling. When these two meet in a championship round, the stakes are real and the atmosphere tends to match.
This is a Round 1 fixture in the Longford Senior Hurling Championship, kicking off at 7pm on Saturday evening. Both clubs are senior-grade outfits with serious pedigrees: Longford Slashers were founded in 1954 as a merger of Longford Wanderers and Whiterock Slashers, and have been competitive in both football and hurling ever since. Clonguish Gaels, based in Newtownforbes just outside the county town, have roots going back to 1889 - making them one of the older clubs in the county. They dominated Longford hurling for stretches of the 20th century and remain a strong force.
Championship hurling at this level is fast and physical. County-town derbies and near-neighbours clashes carry extra bite, and the 7pm start means a long bright July evening with good conditions for the game. Admission is free.
