Trad Session at Duignan's Tallyho

At Duignan's Tallyho · New Street, Longford, Co. Longford

Traditional Irish music session in a Longford pub

On the first Tuesday of every month, Duignan’s Tallyho on New Street opens its doors to local Comhaltas musicians for an evening of traditional Irish music. The pub has been trading since 1875, and the session carries that same sense of continuity, fiddles, bodhrán and pipes played by people who grew up in the tradition rather than performers booked for the night. It is free to walk into, free to sit and listen, and open to anyone who wants to join in with an instrument.

What to expect

Expect fiddles, bodhrán, pipes, banjo and the odd song, played by musicians connected to the Longford branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the organisation that runs trad classes and sessions across the county. The pub’s age shows in the detail, dark wood, a long-serving bar counter and the kind of low-key atmosphere that lets the music carry the room rather than a sound system. Sessions like this rarely follow a set list; tunes get called informally and the circle of players can grow or shrink through the night depending on who is in town. It suits both committed trad listeners and anyone who happens to wander in from New Street looking for a pint and finds a session in full swing instead.

Getting there

Duignan’s Tallyho is on New Street in Longford town centre, a short walk from the Market Square and the bus stop on Dublin Street. Longford town has direct Bus Eireann and rail links from Dublin’s Connolly Station, with the train station a ten-minute walk from the pub. On-street parking is available nearby, along with the Market Square car park.

While you’re in Longford

Longford town is the county’s commercial hub, built around St Mel’s Cathedral and the River Camlin, with a run of independent pubs and shops along Main Street and New Street worth a wander before or after the session. There is more to see in Longford and across Co. Longford.
