Lough Ree Heritage Boat Tours

At Athlone Lough Ree Heritage & Boating Centre · Athlone, Co. Westmeath

Heritage boat tour exploring Lough Ree islands and archaeological sites

What to Expect

Lough Ree, Ireland’s largest inland lake, contains a rich archaeological heritage. Boat tours depart from Athlone and explore the lake’s monastic islands (including Clonmacnoise connections), medieval ecclesiastical sites, wildlife habitats, and scenic shorelines. Tours are led by guides knowledgeable in the lake’s history, archaeology, and natural environment. Visitors see islands with early Christian settlements, standing stones, and learn about the lake’s role in Irish heritage.

Good to Know

Tours operate daily throughout summer 2026. Typical duration 2 - 3 hours. Admission €20. Tours depart from Athlone boating centres (Lough Ree Heritage Centre or independent boat tour operators). Weather dependent. Advance booking recommended. Life jackets provided. The lake can be choppy; participants should be reasonably fit and comfortable on water.

Getting There

Tours depart from Athlone town, easily accessible by train, bus, and car. Athlone railway station and bus station are in the town centre (10 mins walk to boat departure points).
