What to Expect

Malahide Castle has been occupied, in one form or another, since the 12th century, and the interior museum walks visitors through 800 years of continuous history via original furniture, family portraits and historic artefacts belonging to the Talbot family, who lived at the castle until the 1970s. A major renovation programme upgraded the presentation into museum-quality exhibitions covering Irish furniture, decorative arts and the family’s own story, so it works as much as a social history museum as a straightforward castle tour.

Beyond the castle building itself, the wider demesne is one of the best heritage days out in north County Dublin: the Talbot Botanic Gardens hold an extensive collection of rare and unusual plants across walled and woodland sections, and the grounds also include the ruined medieval Abbey, a playground, and coastal walking routes toward Malahide village. The castle also hosts a running programme of seasonal family activities, guided tours and outdoor events on its lawns through the summer and autumn, so it’s worth checking what’s on alongside a standard visit.

Getting There

Malahide is around 14km north of Dublin city centre and sits on the DART line, roughly 20-25 minutes from the city centre with a short walk from Malahide station to the castle. Express and local Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead routes also serve the village, and there is parking available within the castle demesne.
