Monaghan Photographic Society opens its new season on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, the first of its weekly Tuesday-night meetings that run through to Easter at the Belbroid Centre in Monaghan town. Founded in 1976 and based at the Belbroid Centre since 1988, it is one of the county’s longest-running clubs, bringing together members with every level of experience around a shared interest in photography.
Meetings mix practical workshops, guest speakers and club competitions across the season, with the format varying week to week rather than following a fixed routine. Some nights focus on technique, others bring in outside speakers to talk through their own work, and regular competitions give members a reason to get out shooting between meetings. The society takes a break over the summer months, which is why the season has a clear start date each autumn rather than running year-round, picking up again on the last Tuesday of September and continuing until the first Tuesday in April. New and visiting photographers are welcome to sit in on a meeting, regardless of experience or equipment, and the club’s own social media is the best way to check what a particular week’s programme covers before heading along.
Monaghan town is reached via the N2, roughly two hours from Dublin, 45 minutes from Dundalk and 45 minutes from Cavan by car. Bus Éireann and local services run into the town regularly, though there is no direct train, the nearest stations being Dundalk or Drogheda.
A camera club is a fitting excuse to look at the town properly: the Diamond at its centre, the County Museum’s exhibits running from the Stone Age to the Troubles, and Rossmore Forest Park just outside town with its lakes, redwoods and castle ruins.
