Elphin Tidy Towns Volunteer Session

Elphin Tidy Towns holds a weekly volunteer session every Saturday at 10:30am at the day centre polytunnel in Elphin, with the next date falling on Saturday, 8 August 2026. It is the working end of the town’s Tidy Towns effort, the regular gardening and maintenance shift that keeps the entries judges see each summer looking presentable, rather than a one-off clean-up day.

What to expect

Volunteers gather at the polytunnel for a couple of hours of hands-on work, from planting and weeding to general upkeep of the group’s growing beds and the wider town’s public planting. No experience or special equipment is needed, since the committee provides tools and organises the tasks on the day, and turnout varies from a handful of regulars to a bigger group depending on the week and the season. Elphin Tidy Towns has recently funded its work partly through church-gate collections, which brought in over five hundred euro in a recent round, so the Saturday sessions sit alongside the group’s own fundraising as part of a wider annual effort. Newcomers are welcome to turn up on the day rather than needing to join formally in advance.

Getting there

Elphin is a small town in north County Roscommon on the N4/R368, roughly midway between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon. There is no scheduled bus service directly to the day centre, so a car is the practical way to attend, with parking available nearby in the town.
