Monaghan Dramatic Society brings Disney’s Newsies to the Garage Theatre stage for a four-night run from Thursday, 1 October to Saturday, 3 October 2026, with two shows on the closing Saturday. The musical, based on the 1992 film and inspired by the real Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York, follows a teenage newspaper seller who organises his fellow newsboys against the city’s media moguls after they raise the price the boys pay for their papers.
A score by Alan Menken with book and lyrics by Harvey Fierstein and Jack Feldman gives the show its high-energy choreography and big ensemble numbers, and Monaghan Dramatic Society’s production leans into both, built as a family-friendly staging with a large local cast. The story follows the newsboys’ strike from its spark through to a citywide standoff with the newspaper owners, and the show is pitched as much at families and younger audiences as at regular theatre-goers. It runs four performances across four nights, with two shows on the final Saturday, and marks one of the society’s bigger productions of the year for the Garage Theatre stage.
The Garage Theatre is on the Monaghan Education Campus, just off the Armagh Road on the edge of Monaghan town. Parking is available on site, and the box office is open weekdays from 10am to 2pm for phone and in-person bookings.
