At St Joseph's Pastoral Centre · Broad Road, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan
The Old Monaghan Society keeps the county town’s local history alive through a monthly programme of talks, held on the second Monday of each month in St Joseph’s Pastoral Centre. The next presentation falls on Monday, 10 August 2026 at 8:15pm. Founded in 1992 and reformed in 2012, the society is run by volunteers with an interest in Monaghan town’s past and holds an archive at St Macartan’s College alongside its talks programme.
A single speaker or presentation each month on some aspect of Monaghan town and county history, from documentary screenings to guest historians and members’ own research, usually followed by questions and informal chat over tea. Earlier in 2026 the society opened its year with a screening of the documentary “A Life In Print” to a capacity crowd at St Joseph’s Pastoral Centre, and it holds its AGM within the same monthly slot each February. Everyone is welcome regardless of membership, and the talks tend to draw a loyal audience of Monaghan people along with anyone with a family or research interest in the town’s past. Topics vary from month to month, so it is worth checking the society’s Facebook page ahead of a visit to see what is on the agenda.
St Joseph’s Pastoral Centre is on Broad Road, a short walk from Monaghan town centre.
Monaghan town’s own history is the society’s whole subject, so a talk here pairs naturally with a wander around the Diamond, the Market House and St Macartan’s Cathedral afterwards. There is more to see in Monaghan and across Co. Monaghan.
