Piano Bar Athlone spans three floors on Dublin Gate Street, running as a live music venue and late bar from Thursday to Sunday. Each floor has its own character, and the standout weekly fixture is the Cellar Venue’s Saturday night live music slot, when a run of bands takes the small underground room from midnight until late, followed by a DJ set through the small hours.
Expect a different atmosphere on each floor: cocktails and a curated gin list upstairs on the main Piano Bar floor, a mezzanine lounge in the middle, and live bands in the Cellar Venue below, where the Saturday carousel of acts runs from midnight. DJ Ray O’Reilly plays the main floor Thursday to Saturday from after 10pm, with DJ Gerry Johnson taking over on Sundays, while the mezzanine Piano Lounge gets its own Saturday DJ, Mike Fortune. Once the Cellar’s bands finish, the room turns over to a DJ set playing 90s and 2000s hits until the 2:30am close. Entry is generally free, with a €5 cover kicking in after midnight on Saturdays; cocktails run around €7 and shots €4.50, with rotating two-for-one drinks promotions through the week. The venue has built its identity around that three-floor spread, giving a night out here more range than a single-room bar or club, from a quieter cocktail conversation early in the evening to a packed Cellar dancefloor later on.
Piano Bar is on Dublin Gate Street in Athlone town centre, next door to Ozone Nightclub on the same late-night strip. Street parking is limited at night, and taxis are the practical way home once the venue closes.
