At Queen's Film Theatre · 20 University Square, Belfast, Co. Antrim
Every first Sunday of the month, Queen’s Film Theatre opens its doors to families for Family Pictures - a monthly kids’ film club that pairs a cinema screening with a hands-on workshop or creative activity. It is a proper outing rather than a babysitter drop-off: adults go in with the children, the film is age-rated U, PG, or 12A, and there is usually a free creative session running alongside for younger ones. If your household has been meaning to take the children to a real independent cinema rather than a multiplex, this is the low-pressure way to do it.
QFT selects a different family-friendly film each month, ranging from contemporary releases to curated classics, and announces the title on their website in advance of each date. Alongside the screening, many sessions include a free workshop or creative activity, typically aimed at children aged 3 to 9. The atmosphere is relaxed - the theatre provides booster seats and buggy parking, there is baby-changing on site, and wheelchair spaces are available. Popcorn, snacks, and drinks can be bought in the foyer. Babies under 12 months attend free; any child over 12 months needs their own ticket at £6.50 per person. All adults must bring a child with them, and all children must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or over. The specific film for the July session will be announced on the QFT website closer to the date, so it is worth checking before you book.
QFT itself is Northern Ireland’s leading independent cinema, founded in 1968 and situated in a handsome Victorian terrace on University Square beside Queen’s University Belfast. It has two screens - the larger seats 204, the smaller 91 - and a café-bar in the foyer that is perfectly comfortable for a coffee while you wait for the children to hand back their crayons.
Queen’s Film Theatre is a 15 to 20 minute walk from Belfast city centre along University Road - a straightforward flat route. From Belfast Europa Bus Centre or Great Victoria Street railway station, the Glider rapid transit line (G1 or G2) runs along Great Victoria Street; alight at University Road. Translink Metro bus routes 7, 7a, and 8 also serve the area. If you are driving, street parking is available on the surrounding residential roads at weekends, though spaces fill up around Queen’s University. The Botanic Avenue multi-storey and several surface car parks on Ormeau Road are within easy walking distance.
University Square sits at the edge of the Queen’s Quarter, one of the city’s most walkable neighbourhoods, with the Botanic Gardens, the Ulster Museum, and the terraced streets around Stranmillis all within a short stroll. A Family Pictures morning fits neatly around an afternoon in the gardens or a browse through the museum’s free permanent collection. There is more to see in Belfast and across Co. Antrim.
