At Bord Gais Energy Theatre · Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2

The Bodyguard - The Musical brings one of the best-loved film stories of the 1990s to the stage, wrapped around a full set of Whitney Houston’s most iconic songs. It runs at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre from 4 to 8 August 2026, giving people a handful of evenings to choose from. If you want a big night out in Dublin - something with real spectacle, a belt-it-out soundtrack, and a proper narrative to follow - this fits the bill. It suits friends on a city break, couples looking for a summer event, and anyone who grew up with Whitney Houston’s music.

What to expect

The story follows pop superstar Rachel Marron, who hires a bodyguard, Frank Farmer, after a stalker begins threatening her life. It is a love story and a thriller at the same time, and the tension in the plot gives the songs somewhere to land rather than just being a greatest-hits revue. The 2026 production stars Sidonie Smith as Rachel Marron (she has previously appeared in Sister Act, Chicago, and Jesus Christ Superstar) and Olivier Award-nominated Adam Garcia as Frank Farmer. Matt Milburn, known from Coronation Street and Hollyoaks, plays Sy Spector.

The songs woven through the show include Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, Run to You, I Have Nothing, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and I Will Always Love You. The Bord Gais Energy Theatre is a 2,111-seat venue designed by architect Daniel Libeskind - the glass-and-steel building on Grand Canal Square is striking from the outside and has good sightlines and acoustics inside. Doors open around an hour before the 7:30pm curtain. Note that the production contains strobe lighting, flashing lights, smoke and haze. Under-3s are not permitted in the auditorium, and under-16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 18 or over.

Getting there

The Bord Gais Energy Theatre sits on Grand Canal Square in Dublin’s Docklands, about 1.8km east of the city centre. The easiest way in by public transport is the DART or Luas Red Line to Grand Canal Dock station - from there it is a short walk across the square to the theatre entrance. Several Dublin Bus routes also serve the area. If you are driving, the theatre has no car park of its own; the nearest option is Q-Park Grand Canal Square, and it is worth booking a space in advance on a show night. Taxis and rideshare pick-ups work well from the square after performances.

While you’re in Dublin

Grand Canal Square itself is worth arriving early for - there are restaurants and bars along the waterfront that make a good spot for a pre-show meal. The Docklands is one of the more interesting parts of modern Dublin to walk around, and the city centre is a short journey away for those staying overnight. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
