body electric: Billie Adele and Cristin O'Loughlin

At Garter Lane Gallery · 22a O'Connell Street, Waterford, Co. Waterford

Contemporary paintings on display at Garter Lane Gallery, Waterford

Garter Lane Gallery in Waterford hosts body electric, a two person exhibition by Cork based artist Billie Adele and Wexford based artist Cristín O’Loughlin, from Saturday, 4 July to Saturday, 29 August 2026. Curated by Eamonn Maxwell, the show looks at the body, identity and human connection in the digital era through two distinct bodies of work. Admission is free, and the gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 5:30pm, throughout the run.

What to expect

Billie Adele, a graduate of the Crawford College of Art in Cork, shows large scale figurative paintings that fuse organic and mechanical forms, drawing on ideas of the grotesque as a way of exploring transformation. Cristín O’Loughlin, who trained at NCAD and is based in Wexford, presents mixed media paintings, including work on copper, that layer appropriated social media imagery with fluorescent colour to interrogate digital culture and self representation. Shown together, the two practices approach similar territory, how identity is built, glitched and performed online, from opposite technical directions, one rooted in paint and figuration, the other in mixed media and appropriation. The exhibition is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Waterford City and County Council and the Department of Social Protection.

Getting there

Garter Lane Arts Centre is on O’Connell Street in Waterford city centre, within easy walking distance of the Quay, the Apple Market and Plunkett rail station. The gallery keeps its own opening hours separate from the centre’s theatre programme, so it is worth checking times before a visit outside a scheduled show.

While you’re in Waterford

Garter Lane doubles as the city’s main multidisciplinary arts venue, so a gallery visit can be combined with checking the theatre and film programme running in the same building. There is more to see in Waterford and across Co. Waterford.
