Abbaesque has been putting ABBA songs back into rooms the right way for over 21 years, and when they arrive at The Chambers Bar in Mullingar on a Friday night in July, expect the full show - the harmonies, the costumes, the hits that still fill every corner of a bar at 11pm. This is Ireland’s most-performed ABBA tribute act, with well over 150 shows a year and past appearances on RTÉ’s Late Late Show and a collaboration with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. For anyone who grew up with ABBA, or who simply enjoys a live band playing songs that actually work in a crowd, this is an easy yes.
Abbaesque play the catalogue faithfully - “Dancing Queen”, “Mamma Mia”, “Waterloo”, “Fernando”, “Voulez-Vous” and the rest. The show is built around strong four-part harmonies and period-accurate staging, and the band is practiced at reading a pub room. The Chambers Bar is a proper Mullingar music venue, not a function suite - the stage is close, the sound is good, and the James Joyce mural watching over the bar gives the place its own personality. Live music runs most weekends at The Chambers, but a ticketed show like this one draws a crowd that is there specifically for the performance, which tends to make for a better atmosphere all round. Get there early if you want a seat near the stage, or plan to stand and enjoy it on your feet.
Mullingar sits in the middle of Ireland, about 80km from Dublin and well-served by road from all directions. The N4 is the main route from Dublin and the west; from the south, the N52 connects through Tullamore. Irish Rail runs regular services from Dublin Connolly to Mullingar - the journey takes around 70-80 minutes depending on the service - and the station is a short walk from the town centre. The Chambers Bar is on Mount Street, which is in the town centre itself. Parking in Mullingar town is generally straightforward in the evening; there are public car parks within easy walking distance of Mount Street.
Mullingar is the county town of Westmeath and a lively market town with a good spread of restaurants and bars for before or after the show.
