Moate All Whites open their Westmeath Senior Football Championship campaign against Tubberclair at Pairc Chiarain, Athlone, on Friday, 24 July 2026, throwing in at 7:30pm. The game is round one of Section B, one of the two senior groups this year, and kicks off a run of three group games for each side before the section splits into knockout and relegation placings. Moate, a strong club from the south of the county, and Tubberclair, based on the shores of Lough Ree, have met in championship football before and this meeting was confirmed as part of the county board’s first round draw published in early July.
Pairc Chiarain is Athlone GAA’s home ground on the Ballymahon Road, a modern club venue with three full-size floodlit pitches, so a Friday evening throw-in under lights is a realistic prospect depending on scheduling on the night. Neither Moate nor Tubberclair is a home club at this venue, so both sides travel, which tends to bring a fair crowd from both parishes rather than a lopsided home support. Section B senior football has been competitive in recent seasons, with promotion and relegation between the county’s two senior sections adding an edge to round one form. Expect physical, high-intensity championship football rather than the more expansive style seen in league games, with both management teams treating an opening-round win as important form heading into the rest of the group phase.
Pairc Chiarain is on the Ballymahon Road in the Cloghanboy area of Athlone, a short drive from the town centre and close to the N6 Galway to Dublin route. Athlone’s train station has regular Intercity services from Dublin Heuston and Galway, and Bus Éireann routes serve the town centre, from where the grounds are a taxi ride or a longer walk. On-site parking is available for club fixtures.
Athlone straddles the River Shannon at the gateway to Lough Ree, with Athlone Castle and the town’s restaurants and pubs all within easy reach of Pairc Chiarain.
