At Mullingar Harbour · Mullingar Harbour, Royal Canal, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
Canoe polo is one of those sports that stops people in their tracks the first time they see it - five players a side, in kayaks, passing a ball and shooting into suspended goals at either end of a water pitch. Mullingar Harbour Canoe Polo Club’s summer championships bring that action to the Royal Canal over three days from 10 to 12 July 2026. Free to attend and open to all, it is a good excuse to spend a few hours waterside in Mullingar with something genuinely exciting happening in front of you.
The club runs its competitive calendar from the harbour on the Royal Canal, and the championships form part of their internal season alongside bigger open events. Matches are played on a marked water area roughly 35 metres by 23 metres - compact enough that spectators on the bank catch every pass and every goal. The harbour can run several matches side by side, so there is usually plenty happening at once.
Mullingar Harbour Canoe Polo Club is affiliated with Canoeing Ireland and works with Westmeath Sports Partnership. It has over 50 members, welcomes players from the age of nine upwards, and provides all equipment. The club has hosted national junior development days and attracted 90-odd young players to a junior blitz, so its championships - while a local fixture - are run with proper organisation behind them. Expect a mix of age groups competing, coaches on hand, and a genuine community atmosphere around the water.
Exact match times are to be confirmed nearer the event - check the club website for the schedule before you travel.
Mullingar is on the N4 and N52, about 80 kilometres west of Dublin, and is well served by Irish Rail on the Dublin Heuston to Westport and Ballina line. The journey from Heuston takes around 75 minutes. The harbour itself sits beside the Royal Canal on the west side of the town centre, a short walk from the train station. Parking is available along the canal basin area.
Mullingar is a solid midlands town with a good range of cafes and restaurants, and Lough Ennell is a few minutes’ drive south if you want to stretch the day further. There is more to see in Mullingar and across Co. Westmeath.
