Local Tips

The flight-tracking means your chauffeur is already adjusting if your Dublin arrival is delayed - one less thing to worry about after a long journey. By the time you reach Killarney, you’ll have had 3.5 hours to decompress and plan.

Killarney is a railway town shaped by Victorian tourism, and the national park begins right at the end of the high street. The best low-effort first walk from the town centre is Knockreer: through the demesne gates beside the cathedral, ten minutes on foot from the station, down to the shore of Lough Leane with Carrauntoohil across the water. Do it before breakfast on your first full day and you’ll have the paths almost to yourself.

If you’re interested in getting out on the water, Ross Castle is the starting point - hire a rowboat or a small motor boat there and cross to Innisfallen Island in about fifteen minutes. The ruined monastery on the island ran for 850 years and the monks wrote the Annals of Innisfallen there, one of the main sources we have for early medieval Irish history. Bring something to eat and take your time.

For evenings, Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett Street is where locals will direct you for trad sessions - small, low-ceilinged, music from about half nine most nights. It’s the Killarney pub locals send you to when they get tired of being asked.
