The 3.5-hour run from Dublin gives you plenty of time to plan your first evening in Killarney. The town is compact - the train station is a five-minute walk from the high street, and Killarney National Park begins where the high street ends. If you’re arriving with energy to spare, the Knockreer walk is the locals’ move: ten minutes from the station on foot, through the demesne gates beside the cathedral, down to the lake edge with Carrauntoohil framed across the water. Almost nobody else does it.
For your first dinner, Treyvaud’s on High Street is where locals book for a birthday - pan-fried venison, Kenmare Bay scallops, Irish beef. If you want something lighter after a long transfer, Khao on High Street does chargrilled duck and lunch specials that keep the bill under fifteen euro.
The 15-minute service stop is built into the journey - useful on a trip of this length. If you’re arriving in summer, be aware that the Ring of Kerry road is the size of a small car: hire a small vehicle if you’re driving it yourself, or take an organised loop from Killarney rather than trying it in a saloon.
For your best day out from the town, the Gap of Dunloe walk is the classic: get a taxi to Kate Kearney’s Cottage, walk 11 km south through five glacial lakes with no cars, and take a boat back across the lakes from Lord Brandon’s Cottage to Ross Castle. Allow a full day.
