Abbeyfeale Farmers Market sets up in The Square every Friday morning, the one fixed weekly date for fresh produce in this West Limerick town on the River Feale. It is one of only 36 markets in Ireland, and the only one in County Limerick, to hold Bord Bia’s Code of Good Practice Standard, a mark of how the market is run rather than what any single stallholder sells. For a town of under 2,000 people, that is a real point of local pride and one reason the market has kept going for years.

What to expect

Stalls fill The Square from 9am to 1.30pm with seasonal fruit and vegetables, home baking, and prepared foods such as nettle soup, alongside the usual mix of local meat, eggs and preserves. It is a small-town market rather than a tourist draw, so the produce turns over with the seasons and the same growers tend to be back week to week. Abbeyfeale itself sits on the old Cork to Limerick road and is best known locally for Fleadh by the Feale, its May music festival, but the Friday market is the quieter, everyday version of the same community habit of gathering in the town centre. Cash is the safest bet for most stalls, and it is worth arriving earlier rather than later for the best pick of home baking.

Getting there

The Square is in the centre of Abbeyfeale, about 33km west of Limerick city on the N21. There is on-street parking around the square, and the market is an easy walk from anywhere in the town centre.
