Cavan Mart holds its general cattle sale every Friday on Railway Road at the edge of Cavan town, one of the weekly fixtures that still sets the working rhythm of the county’s farming calendar. Heavy and cull cows go through the ring from 11:30am, followed by the wider run of store cattle, heifers and bullocks. The mart draws farmers and buyers from across Cavan and the border counties, and on a busy Friday the yard and car park are full well before the first pen is called.
Friday at Cavan Mart starts with heavy and cull cows from 11:30am, moving through the day to the general run of store cattle, dry cows, heifers and bullocks that make up the bulk of the weekly entry. Buyers come from a wide catchment across Ulster as well as Cavan itself, and prices are called out ring-side in the usual mart fashion, with online bidding also available through MartEye for buyers who cannot attend in person. The mart has a canteen for farmers and buyers between pens, and the yard fills with trailers and jeeps from early morning as cattle are penned ahead of sale time. It is a working sale rather than a spectacle, but for anyone who has not been to an Irish livestock mart before, a Friday morning at Cavan Mart is as good an introduction as any to how the trade still runs.
Cavan Mart is on Railway Road in Drumavanagh, on the southern edge of Cavan town, well signposted from both the N3 and the town centre. It is a short drive or taxi ride from Cavan’s bus and rail station, and there is free parking on site for buyers and sellers.
