All-Ireland Senior Football Championship - Wexford Qualifier

At Chadwicks Wexford Park · Clonard Road, Wexford, Co. Wexford

All-Ireland Senior Football Championship

An All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier at Chadwicks Wexford Park is one of those August afternoons that reminds you why inter-county football matters. These are knockout - or near-knockout - fixtures where every kick counts and the tension is real. The qualifier series exists precisely to keep teams alive when the provincial roads close, so whoever lines out alongside Wexford on the day will be fighting just as hard. If you enjoy watching top-level Gaelic football in a proper county ground, with a crowd that knows the game, this is worth the trip.

What to expect

Chadwicks Wexford Park holds around 18,000 spectators and has been the home of Wexford GAA football and hurling since a major redevelopment completed in 2001. The ground sits on Clonard Road on the edge of Wexford town and has been steadily improved since - floodlights were installed in 2023, and the main stand received new bucket seating in 2024. One sideline has a covered stand with fixed seating; the other sides are open terracing, including the Clonard End, which tends to fill with the more vocal supporters. Accessibility improvements have been added under the main stand in recent years, including dedicated wheelchair platforms.

Under the 2026 championship format, the qualifier series uses a modified double-elimination structure. Teams enter depending on how early they exited their provincial championship. A win on the day keeps Wexford’s summer alive; a loss ends it. These matches carry genuine edge, and the Wexford faithful turn out in force for them. Kick-off is at 3:30pm, so there is plenty of time to get settled, grab food and find a good spot on the terrace.

Getting there

Wexford town is well served by road and rail. On the M11/N11 from Dublin it is roughly 1 hour 45 minutes; from Waterford it is under an hour on the N25. Wexford railway station is a short walk from the town centre, and Irish Rail runs regular services from Dublin Connolly and Rosslare Europort. The ground on Clonard Road is about 15 minutes on foot from the station. Parking is available at the ground and on surrounding roads; expect it to fill up in the hour before throw-in, so arriving early is worthwhile.

While you’re in Wexford

Wexford town itself is a compact, walkable place with a decent selection of pubs and restaurants along the quays - a good spot for a meal before or after the match. The county has some of the finest beaches in Leinster, and Enniscorthy is just 20 minutes inland if you want to make a full day of it. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
