Ana Frango Elétrico at Whelan's

At Whelan's · 25 Wexford Street, Dublin 2

Ana Frango Elétrico at Whelan's Dublin

Ana Frango Elétrico is one of the most singular voices to emerge from Brazil in recent years - a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, visual artist and poet who has spent the last decade building a sound unlike anything else in contemporary music. This Dublin date at Whelan’s on Wexford Street is a rare Irish opportunity to see them live, and Whelan’s is a venue that suits the music well: a proper room with good sound, a long history, and an audience that takes music seriously.

The show draws fans of bossa nova, tropicália, funk, disco and exploratory pop, but the categories barely do justice to what Ana actually does. If you have any interest in Brazilian music, or in artist-led music that moves between genres without belonging to any of them, this is worth your evening.

What to expect

Ana Frango Elétrico - whose stage name comes from a family nickname that translates roughly as “Electric Chicken” - released their debut album Mormaço Queima in 2018, followed by Little Electric Chicken Heart in 2019, which earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album. Their third album, Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua (2023), released through Mr Bongo, Risco and Think!, was described as “a hard-grooving time machine” and confirmed their reputation as one of Brazil’s most inventive artists of their generation.

Live, Ana is known for rich, groove-driven performances that draw on the full range of their influences - Jorge Ben Jor and Caetano Veloso sit comfortably alongside Prince and disco in the sonic mix. The show is on the main stage at Whelan’s, general admission standing, and is over-18s only (bring ID).

Getting there

Whelan’s is at 25 Wexford Street, Dublin 2, roughly a 10-minute walk from St Stephen’s Green. The Harcourt Street LUAS stop on the Green Line is about five minutes away on foot. Dublin Bus routes on South Great George’s Street and Camden Street put you within a short walk. Parking in this part of Dublin 2 is limited in the evening, so public transport is the practical choice for most visitors.

While you’re in Dublin

Wexford Street and its surroundings are at the centre of Dublin’s live music scene, with good food and bars within a few minutes’ walk in any direction. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
