Belfast Improv take on Homer’s Odyssey for one night at The Black Box on Sunday 16 August 2026, turning the Greek epic into a fully improvised musical comedy. The show follows Odysseus and his warriors trying to find their way home, running into Trojans, monsters and gods along the way, with every song made up on the spot and performed live with musical accompaniment. Nothing is scripted in advance, so no two nights of this format ever play out the same way.
This is long-form improv with a musical theatre spine: performers take audience suggestions and build a loose epic-quest narrative live, singing scenes rather than just speaking them, backed by a live musician. Expect broad, silly, high-energy comedy rather than tight one-liners, closer in spirit to musical theatre parody than a stand-up night. The show is 18+ only, doors open at 7:00pm with the performance starting at 7:30pm.
Belfast Improv is one of the city’s longest-running improv troupes, and taking on an epic like the Odyssey rather than a shorter suggestion-based format is a bigger undertaking than a standard improv night, closer to a fully sung one-act musical made up in real time than a series of short games. Because the whole thing is unscripted, the specific jokes and songs depend entirely on what the audience feeds the cast at the start, so regulars and first-timers alike get a genuinely different show every time it runs.
The Black Box is in the Cathedral Quarter, a five-minute walk from Belfast city centre and close to Metro and Glider stops on Royal Avenue and Donegall Street. Great Victoria Street and Lanyon Place train stations are both within easy walking distance, and Writers’ Square car park is the nearest option for drivers.
